Universal Licenses Free Downloads

Published: 2006-08-30
Universal Music and SpiralFrog.com have gotten together to offer ad-supported free downloads of music and music videos.

According to the Associated Press, "The two-year deal calls for New York-based SpiralFrog.com to split advertising revenue with the recording company." So people register at the site to download as much as they like. Users will simply be required to renew registration once in awhile or they'll be cut off.

Unlike similar sites which offer free tunes and videos streaming on your computer, SpiralFrog.com will allow you to actually download the tunes and transfer them to portable devices.

However there are a couple of downfalls. Unlike paid downloads you will not be able to burn these tracks onto a CD. Also, in order to play the tunes on your portable device they must be equipped with Microsoft Windows digital rights management software, meaning that people will not be able to put songs onto their iPods - the highest selling portable music device on the market.

Universal hopes this will curb illegal music downloads.
