Mars Volta part with drummer

Published: 2006-08-02
Drummer for prog rock band Mars Volta, Jon Theodore has parted ways with the band.

You would think that with eight members rounding up the Mars Volta lineup they could do with one less but Theodore has already been replaced by Blake Fleming, who played drums for the band during some of their early demos.

According to a press release, on tour bassist Pablo Hinojos-Gonzalez "will expand his role, contributing both guitar and sound manipulation skills." And since the band is opening for the Red Hot Chili Peppers and their guitarist John Frusciante was a major contributor to the album, the band hints that he may make an appearance or two.

The news comes just prior to the release of the band's new record Amputechture, which is due out on September 12, pushed back from their original release date of August 22. No word on whether Theodore's departure had any affect on the release date.

A shortened version of "Viscera Eyes," which runs on the album at 9:25, is set to be the record's first single.
