MTV Video Awards nominations announced, Shakira and Chili Peppers leading the pack

The nominations for the moon man awards, better known as the MTV Video Awards, have been released.

At the top of the heap are Colombian cutie Shakira and California rockers the Red Hot Chili Peppers with seven nominations a piece including one each for Video of the Year. Runners up with a distant 4 nominations a piece are MTV mainstay Madonna, Pete Wentz' prodigies Panic! At The Disco and pop princess Christina Aguilera.

Hounourable mentions go to Chris Brown, AFI and Gnarls Barkley, taking three nods a piece and Kanye West and Rihanna, who each got two nominations.

The lone Canadian nominee is Nelly Furtado, whose sexy hit "Promiscuous" has been heating up the charts on both sides of the border. Nelly is up for Best Female Video and Best Dance Video.

Many of the show's performances will come from folks who aren't nominees but who will likely be raking in the most nods for next years show. Justin Timberlake, The Killers and BeyoncÈ, who all have singles out currently but won't be coming out with full-length records until the fall, will all be performing.

Other performers include TI, the Raconteurs, Panic! At the Disco, and Ludacris.

The awards will be doled out on August 31.
