Mercury Prize shortlist announced

The shortlist for the UK's prestigious Mercury Prize was announced on July 18.

The award goes to the musical act from either Britain or Ireland with the best album between July 25, 2005 and July 17, 2006. Established as an alternative to the largely mainstream Brit Awards, the Mercury Prize is decided by 12 judges who chose the shortlist out of 200 albums entered.

Last year Antony and the Johnsons' I Am A Bird Now took home the prize, beating out mega-rock stars Coldplay and favourites the Kaiser Chiefs.

The shortlist was announced on the morning of July 18 at London's Commonwealth Club.

Here's who's up for this year's prize:

Arctic Monkeys - Whatever People Say I Am, That's What I'm Not
Isobel Campbell & Mark Lanegan Ballad Of the Broken Seas
Editors - The Back Room
Guillemots - Through the Windowpane
Richard Hawley - Coles Corner
Hot Chip - The Warning
Muse - Black Holes & Revelations
Zoe Rahman - Melting Pot
Lou Rhodes - Beloved One
Scritti Politti - White Bread, Black Beer
Sway - This Is My Demo
Thom Yorke - The Eraser

The winner will take home £20 000 but the real prize will be the publicity gained by winning the award. The winner will be announced on September 5.
