Just weeks after Prince's official website received a Webby award for lifetime achievement, the musician has decided to shut it down.

The artist opened the website in 2001 and has released more than seven full-length CDs worth of music, available only on the website. According to the Webby Awards site, "Long before MySpace and iTunes, Prince used the web as a way to distribute music."

Fans had to pay a monthly or annual fee to get access to the site.
According to E!Online in an e-mailed statement to club members Prince stated that the website had gone as far as it could go in it's current form, "We have decide to put the club on hiatus until further noticeÖThe NPG Music Club was a first step; the lessons learned will last 4ever. Now comes a time of great reflection and restructuring. The future holds nothing but endless opportunity and we plan on seizing it wholeheartedly. Don't u want 2 come?"
