Canadaís top Indie stars form Polaris shortlist

Published: 2006-07-09
Some of Canada's top indie music artists have been included in the list of nominees for the inaugural Polaris Music Prize.

Steve Jordan, a former executive with Warner Music Canada and True North Records, launched the award earlier this year to recognize and promote Canada's best album, based entirely on creative merit. The winner will receive $20,000.

Nominees were chosen by a jury of more than 100 music journalists and broadcasters who selected their top five albums released between June 1, 2005 and May 31, 2006. From this list of contenders, the top 10 choices created a shortlist for the Prize.

The winner will be announced at a gala in Toronto on September 18. The nominees and their albums include:

Broken Social Scene, Broken Social Scene
Cadence Weapon, Breaking Kayfabe
The Deadly Snakes, Porcella
Final Fantasy, He Poos Clouds
Sarah Harmer, I'm A Mountain
K'naan, The Dusty Foot Philosopher
Malajube, Trompe L'oeil
Metric, Live It Out
The New Pornographers, Twin Cinema
Wolf Parade, Apologies to the Queen Mary

These nominees will be included on a limited edition album which will be released on August 22.
