V Festival coming to Toronto

Published: 2006-07-04
Virgin Group chairman Sir Richard Branson announced on June 30 what everyone in Toronto had suspectedóthat he'd be bringing the popular UK music festival, the V Festival to Toronto. Always great at making an entrance, the business mogul rappelled from a helicopter and touched down at the Docks Entertainment Complex to make his announcement.

The V Festival is an annual music festival in the UK. In its 10th year, the popular festival takes place simultaneously in Chelmsford and Staffordshire and hosts some of the biggest acts on the UK music scene.

But this year the festival will be traveling to Canada. The Toronto V Festival will take place September 9-10 on Toronto Island. It will feature two stages over two days with over 40 different acts. Though they haven't all been announced, there's a great mix of Canadian bands and bands from around the world.

So far the Canadian portion of the lineup includes post-punk band Alexisonfire, Montreal rockers the Sam Roberts Band, Juno award winning hip-hop artist K'naan, and indie rockers the Dears and the Hidden Cameras. Non-Canadian additions to the lineup include Massive Attack, The Raconteurs, Wolfmother, the Flaming Lips, Gnarls Barkley, Eagles of Death Metal and many more. A total of 19 acts are listed on the Virgin Festival website so we can only assume more acts will be added as days go on.

The two-day fest is expected to draw in 50, 000 folks from all over, that's 25, 000 each day. Tickets to the show are $57.50 for one day and $104.50 for both. You can pick up your tickets right now at your nearest Future Shop in the GTA and starting July 8 at Ticketmaster. The price includes shows at both stages and the Red Light Lounge that will feature DJs from all over the world. It also includes access to all the rides at Centreville, as well as a food village, vendors and interactive exhibitions. The V Festival also happens to fall on the first weekend of the star-studded Toronto International Film Festival so you just never know who might decide to drop by.

Though Toronto is the first V Festival outside of the UK, it won't be the last. Branson's festival will stop in Baltimore September 2007 and is expected to head to Vancouver or Montreal in 2007.
