JJ72 Split, Thank Fans and Foes

Published: 2006-06-27
Irish indie rockers JJ72 have decided to call it quits after "record company issues".

Mark Greaney, Fergal Matthews and Hilary Woods came together to form JJ72 in 1999. The trio released their self-titled debut in 2000 to critical and commercial success. Though their second album I To Sky wasn't as well received, it still did well on UK charts.

In 2003 bassist Hilary Woods left the band and was replace by Sarah Fox. Though a third album is rumored to have been recorded it was never released.

The band left a heartfelt goodbye to fans on their website saying:
"Reader, we are to let thee know,
JJ72's body only lies below;
For could the grave JJ's soul comprise,
Earth would be richer than the skies."

The band went on to thank both lovers and haters of JJ72 saying, "We remember everything, from mechanical birds in Japan to angels in arid Arizona, from broken bones and Berlin birthdays to predatory Portsmouth spiders. For those who disliked and perhaps despised (gasp) JJ72, thank you - how did beautiful photographs exist without a negative?!"

They also thanked former member Hilary Woods, "for being a dazzling damsel".

Lead singer Mark Greaney is currently in studio working on a new project. No word on what the remaining members of JJ72 will be up to after the split.
