BBC Axes Top of the Pops

After 42 years of hosting some of the biggest names in pop music, the British Broadcasting Corporation has decided to pull the plug on Top of the Pops.

The once popular UK television program has hosted the likes of the Rolling Stones, the Beatles Nirvana and the Spice Girls since it started in 1964. The final Top of the Pops will air in the UK on July 30th.

According to the Associated Press, BBC Director of Television Jana Bennett said, "We're very proud of a show which has survived 42 years in the U.K. and gone on to become a worldwide brand, but the time has come to bring the show to its natural conclusion," she said adding, "in a rapidly changing musical landscape 'Top of the Pops' no longer occupies the central role it once did."

The show has been suffering from falling ratings in recent years, likely prompting the BBC's decision to cut it from their programming.

No word on who will play at the show's finale.
