Ottawa Folk Festival goes back to its roots

Published: 2006-06-02
The Ottawa Folk Festival announced this year's lineup and relieved many fans by revealing that folk music would once again dominate.

The annual music festival is in its 13th year and this time around it will keep the focus on folk and indie performers. Last year, Canadian Idol Kalan Porter headlined, disappointing many of the festival's loyal audience.

"The purists did not appreciate the show. Surely, his fans were there÷but we thought we should go back to basics," says Dan Lalande, the festival's artist liaison.

Those 'purists' should be impressed by this year's headlining performers including Ron Sexsmith, Steve Earle and Dar Williams.

Organizers are still hoping to attract newcomers and will try something new for the festival's opening show. Normally, the festival begins at Britannia Park but this year, a special opening show at Capital Music Hall will highlight performers such as The Sadies and Amy Millan, who has recorded and performed with the bands Stars and Broken Social Scene.

"I think the lineup on Thursday night will definitely get the under-30 crowd in," says Lalande.

The Ottawa Folk Festival runs from August 17 to 20. For more information, please go to www.ottawafolk.org.
