Dixie Chicks ëTaking the Long Wayí to the top of the charts

Published: 2006-06-01
Country divas the Dixie Chicks have managed to top the US charts in spite of the political controversy that has plagued the band since lead singer Natalie Maines said that she was ashamed to be from the same state as President George W. Bush.

Though many artists have spoken out against the current American President (even writing entire albums against him like Green Day and Neil Young) conservative country listeners took Maines' comments to be unpatriotic. Country stations stopped playing their songs and fans began publicly destroying their CDs.

But the Chicks still managed to sell 526 000 copies of their new album Taking the Long Way. This is the first album since the Bush bashing incident and its sales were enough to top the Billboard charts. According to Reuters, the album "exceeds industry expectations by more than 100 000 copies."

But compared to their last studio release Home which sold 780 000 copies in its first week, the sales aren't as high as they once were.

The first single off of the album "Not Ready To Make Nice" is about their struggles since speaking their mind about the President.
