29-year old Birmingham, Alabama native Taylor Hicks has become the fifth American Idol.
Known for his shaggy grey hair and his soulful sound Hicks follows in the footsteps of Kelly Clarkson, Ruben Studdard, Fantasia Barrino and Carrie Underwood to take the coveted AI crown.
Hicks beat out runner up Katharine McPhee in the star studded finale of the show's fifth season. Members of the final 12 performed duets with music stars like Live, Mary J. Blige, Toni Braxton, Prince and second season runner up Clay Aiken.
Though she didn't take the top spot, McPhee didn't seem too phased, and she shouldn't as runners up to the program including Clay Aiken, Bo Bice and Diana DeGarmo all scored record contracts post-idol in spite of their loss.
The program drew in more than 28 million viewers this week and will be re-broadcast in more than 150 countries.
