Prince Debuts at Number One

Published: 2006-03-30
In spite of all the success that he has garnered, Prince has never had an album debut at number one on the Billboard Charts. Until now, that is.

The artist's newest album 3121 (that's thirty-one twenty-one) is his first album to hit number one in its first week of release. Though this is his first number one debut, it is not Prince's first time in the top spot. Other Prince albums to climb to the top of the chart include the Batman soundtrack, Around the World in a Day, and of course the infamous Purple Rain.

Some of the album's success may have to do with his purple tickets. Taking a page from the book of fictional chocolateer Willy Wonka, Prince has put a limited number of purple tickets in his albums. Anyone who finds one of the tickets will supposedly attend a private performance by the artist himself.

Prince's current single from 3121 is "Black Sweat," and is gaining airplay across North America.
