Nikkiís Sudden Passing

Published: 2006-03-28
Former Swell Maps member Nikki Sudden passed away on March 26, just one day after playing a gig at New York City's the Knitting Factory.

The Swell Maps were a UK post-punk group that centred around Nikki Sudden (Adrian Nicholas Godfrey) and his Epic Soundtracks (Kevin Paul Godfrey). Though the band only released three records, they were influenced by bands like T-Rex and Sonic Youth.

Since the split of Swell Maps Nikki has gone one to record a slew of albums, both as a solo artist and with his band the Jacobites. He has collaborated with members of REM, Wilco, and Sonic Youth. The 49-year-old had just recently completed his album The Truth Doesn't Matter shortly before he passed away.

The Jacobites are scheduled to play a gig in London on March 29 and the band still plans to play the show in Nikki's memory.

A collection of early Swell Maps recordings called Wastrels and Whippersnappers is set to be released on May 8, which will include previously unreleased material by the band.

Yeah, it makes me feel very sad. Nikki was supposed to be here with me recording on the west coast of Ireland in a few weeks...I'm gutted totally gutted, and will always wonder what this very creatively pregnant friendship would have yielded...TAD
