The Smiths Wouldn't reunite for $ 5 Million

For renowned eighties Britpop pioneers The Smiths to reunite it'll take more than just money.

According to former front man Morrissey, it will at least take more than $5 million. as the band has already turned that sum down to get back together.

During an interview at SXSW on March 16, Morrissey told the public that the band turned down $5 million to reunite for this summer's Cochella Valley Arts & Music Festival in California. According to Reuters, the revelation triggered gasps from the audience. "When journalist David Fricke asked if he had considered it, Morrissey replied, 'No, because money doesn't come into it,' a response that drew applause from the crowd."

Though the Smiths gained little success outside of the UK while together in the eighties, they garnered a large amount of critical praise and later went on to influence the hugely successful Britpop movement that included bands like Radiohead, Blur, and Oasis.

Morrissey, now having a successful solo career, was one of the bigger names that played SXSW this year as the festival is usually reserved for bands with more talent than exposure.

After SXSW he is headed out on a tour of the UK. A North American tour hasn't yet been announced, but is expected to follow.
