Rolling Stones Play the Copa

People who are going to be in Rio de Janeiro this weekend can avoid paying the ever-rising price of Rolling Stones tickets when the aging rockers play at Copacabana beach for free.

This Saturday, February 18th, the Rolling Stones will be playing at the beach opposite the Copacabana Palace Hotel, where the rockers will be staying while in Brazil. One million fans are expected to pack the beach in one of the biggest rock concerts ever.

In anticipation of the revelers, concerns are growing amongst the locals. "Rio is scarred by violent crime and gunplay often spills over from the slums ruled by drug gangs into city streets," Reuters explains. "More than 6,600 people were killed last year in a population of six million." Up to 10,000 police will be on duty the evening of the show.

The concert is being financed by both the city and communications giants Claro and Motorola. Though corporate sponsorship is common for concerts, the involvement of the city has brought some criticism. Reuters reports that in a letter to local newspaper, one man wrote, "Is it better to have a million-dollar rock show than to try to ease the misery that exists right next to the concert stage? Only one more thing... I adore the Rolling Stones."

If you can't make it to Rio for the show, it will also be broadcast online on AOL Music and on radio via XM Satellite Radio at 7:30 p.m. EST.

The concert will also be recorded for release on DVD at a later date.
