Hip hop record producer MC James Yancey, otherwise known as Jay Dee or J Dilla, passed away on February 10th due to kidney complications. He was only 32 years old.

Though he never hit the mainstream, Jay Dee had a strong underground following with fans like Pharell Williams from the Neptunes.

He worked with many of hip hop's brightest stars, starting as a member of A Tribe Called Quest's production team, the Ummah. He began to gain respect in the 90s. He worked on tracks for Busta Rhymes, De La Soul, and Common, as well as his own recordings.

In 2004 it was made public that Jay Dee has been struggling with lupus nephritis, an illness to do with the kidneys. Due to his bouts with the disease, Jay Dee spent a lot of time in a hospital bed, but that didn't stop him from working on his music. According to his record label's website, "working both from his home studio and while hospitalizedófrom a portable sound system including turntable, samplers, and small boxes of vinyl brought in and out from visitorsóDilla continued making music at his usual non-stop pace, circulating beats to MCs, and coming up with the foundation of what would become Donuts."

In November 2005 while ill, Jay Dee even performed some of his live shows in Europe from a wheelchair.

He eventually passed away from the illness on February 10th in Los Angles.

Donuts was released on February 7th, and is in stores right now.
