Arctic Monkeys break sales record

It's official: the Artic Monkeys have the fastest selling debut album in UK history.

Whatever People Say I Am, That's What I'm Not has sold over 360,000 copies since it's release on January 23. This puts them above pop group Hear'Say's previous record of selling 306,631 albums in their first week of sales.

This debut release has surpassed first week sales of British of debut albums of superstars like Coldplay, Oasis and even the Beatles. The fastest selling record ever in the UK is Oasis Be Here Now which sold about 655,000 copies.

The album didn't reach these sales heights through the promotion of a major label (the band is signed to indie record label Domino) but through word of mouth, or should I say word of web, when the bands early singles started to pop up online.

They also made themselves known through touring and they continue to do that currently touring the UK. When they're done in at home they'll head down to North America for the month of March including a few dates in Canada including two shows in Toronto, one opening for Oasis at the ACC and one headlining at a smaller club venue.

Here's where they'll be in Canada:

March 20, Toronto, ON - Air Canada Centre - opening for Oasis
March 21, Toronto, ON - Phoenix Concert Theatre
March 22, Montreal, QC - La Sala Rossa
