Grandaddy Retiring After Next Record

Published: 2006-01-30
On January 27th indie space-rock group Grandaddy announced that its upcoming album would be their last.

Just Like Fambly Cat is due for a May 9th release, after which the group plans to disband, with no plans for a final tour.

Front man Jason Lytle, bassist Kevin Garcia, drummer Aaron Burtch, guitarist Jim Fairchild, and keyboardist Tim Dryden have been making music together since the mid-90s and have released a steady stream of albums since their 1998 debut, Everything Beautiful is Far Away.

Lytle told Pitchfork that the breakup of the group has left the members free to pursue whatever they want, though he will continue to make music. He assures fans the breakup was amicable. "It's not necessarily a bad thing. It's no sadder than... I'm likening it to the natural crumbling of canyon walls...I just think we saw the opportunity to bring it to an end, to do it and still remain friends."

On the band's official website, Burtch also had a message for fans. "Maybe there just aren't any words to properly express my feelings about the past 14 years or so. It just goes too deep."

Here's what the band's last album will look like:
01 What Happened
02 Jeez Louise
03 Summer... It's Gone
04 Oxygen/Aux Send
05 Rear View Mirror
06 The Animal World
07 Skateboarding Saves Me Twice
08 Where I'm Anymore
09 50%
10 Guide Down Denied
11 Elevate Myself
12 Campershell Dreams
13 Disconnecty
14 This Is How It Always Starts
15 Shangri-La (outro)
