New Pantheon Awards Postponed

Published: 2006-01-27
The first New Pantheon Award which was scheduled to be handed out on February 6 has been postponed to sometime in March.

"We've decided to reschedule the inaugural event for the New Pantheon awards to give us greater opportunity for reaching our goals of making the best show possible," organizer Tom Sarig said in a statement to Billboard. "Rescheduling to March 2006 will in effect allow us to achieve the vision we set out to accomplish."

The New Pantheon Awards was modeled after the short lived Shortlist Prize which was also started by Sarig and Greg Spotts. Both prizes were modeled after the Mercury prize in Britain which gives a prize to a band that shows a high quality of music in the UK without the sales to match.

The American counterpart, New Pantheon prize is decided on by a panel that is made up of industry folks and other people in the entertainment business including: Elton John, Elijah Wood, Beck, Margaret Cho, John Legend, Death Cab For Cutie's Ben Gibbard, Keith Urban, Ric Ocasek, Shirley Manson, Linkin Park's Chester Bennington and Mike Shinoda, Suzanne Vega and Dave Matthews.

Nominees must have sold less than 500,000 copies of their album. Nominees include Death Cab For Cutie, which has a member on the New Pantheon panel, Canadian band The Arcade Fire, as well as Antony and the Johnsons who have already won the UK's Mercury Prize.

Here are this year's nominees:

Animal Collective - Feels
Antony and the Johnsons - I Am A Bird Now
Fiona Apple - Extraordinary Marchine
Arcade Fire - Funeral
Bloc Party - Silent Alarm
The Decemberists - Picaresque
Kings of Leon - Aha Shake Heartbreak
M.I.A. - Arular
Sufjan Stevens - Illinoise
