Flaming Lips 'At War with the Mystics'

Published: 2006-01-23
Alternative rockers the Flaming Lips are set to release their newest album this coming spring.

At War with the Mystics, the follow up to 2002's Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots, is set for release on April 4th.

The Flaming Lips formed in the 80s but didn't gain widespread popularity until the 90s with the release of their massively acclaimed The Soft Bulletin. They are known for their psychedelic, multi-layered sound, bizarre song titles, and elaborate live shows that include guys dressed up in animal suits and various light projections.

The band's first single from Mystics, "W.A.N.D.," was released in digital format on January 10th and is available at major digital outlets like iTunes and AOL Music.

Another track that made it onto the album is "Mr. Ambulance Driver," which was featured on the soundtrack of last summer's "The Wedding Crashers" starring Vince Vaughn and Owen Wilson. Though the song was in a funny movie, Lips front man Wayne Coyne told Billboard it was a powerful track. "Every time I hear it, I think Flaming Lips fans will get it and like it. The metaphors and the ideas in the waiting for the ambulance or something to come and save you still hit me."

A special edition of Mystics with a bonus DVD will also be available. It will feature some new tunes, videos, and a 5.1 audio mix of the songs on the album so that you can hear the Flaming Lips coming out of five different speakers on your surround-sound-equipped stereo.

Their next single, "The Yeah Yeah Yeah Song," is slated for release on March 27th. Here's the complete list of tunes you'll find on Mystics:

"The Yeah Yeah Yeah Song"
"Free Radicals"
"The Sound of Failure/It's Dark...Is It Always This Dark??"
"My Cosmic Autumn Rebellion"
"Vein of Stars"
"The Wizard Turns On..."
"It Overtakes Me/The Stars Are So Big, I Am So Small...Do I Stand a Chance?"
"Mr. Ambulance Driver"
"Haven't Got a Clue"
"The W.A.N.D."
"Pompeii Am Gotterdammerung"
"Goin' On"
