Album Sales Slump To Their Biggest Low Since 1996

Published: 2006-01-06
U.S. album sales slid to their lowest level since 1996, a trend that had hopes of an upward spiral, but failed to generate sales in 2005. Despite Mariah Carey's comeback year with Emancipation of Mimi and Green Day's American Idiot, sales were sluggish at best. Neilsen SoundScan fell 7.2 percent from 2004 to 618.9 million unitsóthe lowest since 1996's 616.6 million.

Album sales were hurt by illegal downloads, rival forms of entertainment, and a lack of breakout musical acts last year. As more and more downloads take place, it hurts the music industry in ways one cannot even believe. This marks the biggest slump in album sales in a decade.
