Nellie McKay Spats with Sony

Published: 2006-01-05
Singer-songwriter Nellie McKay has split with Sony after a spat over her new album, Pretty Little Head.

McKay wanted her album, scheduled to have come out January 3rd, to be a 23-track item with 65 minutes of music, while Sony insisted on a 16-track, 48-minute record.

The argument had been going on for a while. At a November 29th concert, McKay expressed her discontent with the record label to her fans, going so far as to distribute the e-mail address of Will Botwin, former Columbia chairman, so her fans could express their discontent, too.

Currently Nellie and her follow-up to 2004's critically acclaimedGet Away From Me are label-less. She is shopping around for a record company that will release her album the way she wants.
