Sugababes switch Members

Published: 2005-12-22
Founding member of the UK girl group Sugababes, Mutya Buena announced she was leaving the group yesterday (December 21).

Founded in 1998 the trio now only has one original member Keisha Buchanan. The third original member, Siobhan Donaghy was replaced by Heidi Range in 2002.

Buena was 13 when she joined the band and insists in a statement on the Sugababes website that it was an amicable departure "I think there comes a time when everyone wants to re-evaluate their life and what they want out of it. For me that time has now come. For a long time I have been discussing with Heidi and Keisha our plans for the future and it got to the point where I honestly felt that the commitment I would need to make to Sugababes over the next 12 months was something that would become compromised by me. Clearly that wouldn't have been fair to Heidi or Keisha or most of all to our fans."

Buena will be replaced by Amelle Berrabah. She will join the babes on their US tour in 2006 and as openers for British boyband Take That's reunion tour.

No word on whether Buena will have any musical plans for the future but the pop star just had her first child Tahila in March.
