MTV and Microsoft give you an 'Urge'

Published: 2005-12-14
Computer giant Microsoft is teaming up with MTV to try and take bite out of Apple's music pie.

This week the two companies announced that they will be launching an online music service beginning next year.

The new service called Urge will come with the next version of Microsoft's Window's Media Player. Similar to other online music services like iTunes or Napster, Urge will offer individual downloads as well as a subscription service that will allow you to 'rent' music for a monthly or yearly fee. Prices for these services haven't been revealed.

The service will feature more than 2 million songs as well as MTV and original content.

The computer whizzes at Microsoft will build the system while MTV will own and operate the new site.

Urge will not be compatible with Apple's iPod which is currently the highest selling portable digital music device with 75% of the sales in the market. By taking this road Microsoft hopes to sell more of their own music device, the iRiver.
