CBGB has till next Halloween to move

Legendary punk stomping ground CBGB has reached a deal with its landlords to stay put for one more year.

In the days before punk hit the glossy mainstream with bands like Green Day and Blink 182 punk had its modest beginnings in the grimy New York club CBGB. Bands like Television, Blondie and the Ramones began playing there in the 1970's.

Recently the club's owner Hilly Kristal was in a dispute with the landlords of the club Bowery Residents Committee when they refused to renew the club's lease after disputes over back rent. The community rallied around the musical landmark in an attempt to keep it open.

On December 7 an agreement was reached by both parties that would allow the club to stay in its current location until October 31, 2006.

No word on if or where the club will relocate, though New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg has indicated that he'd like it to stay in New York.
