Mary J. Blige To Play Nina Simone

Published: 2005-12-06
Mary J. Blige will make her feature debut starring in a film based on jazz legend Nina Simone. The MTV Films and Paramount Pictures movie will show the ups and downs of Simone's life and her relationship with manager Clifton Henderson.

Nina Simone was known as the high priestess of soul. Her popularity inclined in the 1960s with the civil rights song of praise, "To Be Young, Gifted, and Black". The jazz legend soon was banished to Paris, where she later died in 2003.

Blige is currently set to release her forthcoming CD, The Breakthrough on December 20 followed by Reminisce, a greatest hits package due out sometime next year. No word yet when the film will start shooting.
