Grateful Dead Recordings Free Again

Published: 2005-12-02
Legendary psychedelic rock group the Grateful Dead has built its loyal fan base, "the Deadheads," by letting them record Dead concerts and distribute them freely amongst each other as long as no profit was made.

The wave of new technology made it easier to pass the recordings along, and in 2005 the band made digital, downloadable versions of its albums available online.

But last month archive.org, a site offering Dead recordings for free on its websites, was asked to take them down or make them streaming only, meaning that you could listen to them on the website but not download them to your computer.

This enraged Deadheads, who claimed that trading music was an essential part of the community and began a petition to bring the recordings back onto the site. According to Yahoo News, "as of Thursday morning, some 4,200 people had signed."

The shows have now been put back up onto the site, with the exception of the superior recordings made by plugging into the concert's soundboard.
