Coldplay Combats Scalpers

Published: 2005-11-23
Coldplay is known for seeking justice in political statements supporting organizations like Amnesty International and Make Trade Fair, but now the band is looking for fairness for its fans.

In an attempt to combat illegal online ticket sales, the band has set up an online auction for tickets for its latest North American tour. "Whenever we put our tickets up for sale an enormous amount of them end up being sold on," the band says in a statement. "We have given a small number of tickets for the next North American tour to Ticketmaster to auction through a legitimate auction site that they have set up just for ColdplayÖ [A] portion of the proceeds from these auctions will be donated to charity."

The band also screens all requests for presale tickets through its website to ensure that they only go to true fans.

But in a quick check on under event tickets, I got 213 hits for tickets to the Toronto concert and 158 for the Vanvouver date. Though these aren't exactly completely precise research methods, the scalpers clearly haven't been eliminated.

But we thank Coldplay for its efforts anyway.
