Billboard has announced that hip hop star Kanye West will receive the Artist Achievement Award at the 2005 Billboard Music Awards, to be held December 6 at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas.

West, the eighth artist to receive the prestigious award, is to be rewarded "both for his artistic excellence and Billboard chart accomplishments," according to Billboard's official website.

Other artists scheduled to appear at the show, to be broadcast on the Fox TV network, include newly announced performers Green Day, "American Idol" winner Carrie Underwood, AI runner-up Bo Bice, country star Toby Keith and the always controversial R. Kelly.

Also confirmed to appear at the show are 50 Cent, Linkin Park, Blue Man Group and Chris Brown, whose "Run It!" single currently sits atop Billboard's singles chart. And, as reported here at Soulshine last month, Tom Petty will receive Billboard's coveted Century Award at the show.

Awards finalists are determined by performance on Billboard's weekly charts and won't be definitively announced until the end of the "chart year", i.e. the end of this month. Additional performers are still to be announced, as is the host of this year's show.
