1st Annual Canadian Folk Music Awards Nominees Announced

Published: 2005-11-11
Given our rich folk music tradition, it might come as a surprise to many Canadians that this year's Canadian Folk Music Awards will also be this country's first. As the CFMA website notes, "to date, there (exists) no awards that celebrate the breadth and depth of folk music in Canada. Awards such as the Junos, East Coast Music Awards or the Western Canada Music Awards have a few categories that apply to folk and roots music but they offer only a restricted view of the genre."

All that will change, however, on December 10 when the first CFMAs will be given out at a ceremony to be held at the Canadian Museum of Civilization in Gatineau, Quebec. Awards will be presented in 14 categories throughout the night - multiple nominees include Canadian folk scene stalwarts Lynn Miles, The Bills, Gordie Sampson, Mary Jane Lamond and the evening's co-host Connie Kaldor.

Canada's young folkies are also represented in the list of nominees, however - Joel Plaskett has snagged himself a nomination in the Best Songwriter-English category, Jill Barber is up for Best New/Emerging Artist, while Po' Girl and The Wailin' Jennies are both nominated in the Best Vocal Group category.

Performers at the show will include Lamond, James Keelaghan, Ember Swift, David Francey and Le Vent du Nord. For the full list of nominees, visit the official CFMA website at www.canadianfolkmusicawards.ca.

I had the pleasure of hearing a new young group of amazing artists awhile back by the name of House of Doc and am so pleased to hear they have been recognized . I listened to the new CD last night and it has a wonderful sound and quality. Have been a big fan of Vince Ditrich and his work with SOTW for many years much deserved praise for him also.
