Roger Daltrey Confirms Who Recording Plans, Rips Pete Doherty

Published: 2005-11-08
Who singer Roger Daltrey has confirmed that he and Pete Townshend will be heading back into the studio in early 2006 to continue work on the long-delayed Who2 project.

"I don't want to stop and I don't think Pete does (either). We're at the pinnacle of our decline," Daltrey jokingly told Rolling Stone. The singer also revealed that Townshend may confront his 2003 child pornography arrest in song. "He's...angry about what happened to him. Make no mistake about it, it will come out in his music." Townshend, a longtime crusader against child abuse, had all charges against him dropped in the aftermath of his arrest. Under British law, however, Townshend's name must be listed on a registry of sex offenders for five years.

Daltrey also weighed in recently on the UK music scene, telling British newspaper the Sunday Mirror that ex-Libertines and current Babyshambles frontman Pete Doherty was at risk of throwing it all away. "It's a waste of a life really, because he's got talent," said Daltrey. "He seems to be feeding (off) of it, now he's become infamous for his drug addiction he seems to think 'that's what I do so I've got to do it', it's very sad." Daltrey did, however, speak favourably of current UK sensations Arctic Monkeys and Kaiser Chiefs.

In other Who news, the band will release a three-disc DVD set today (November 8). Entitled Tommy and Quadrophenia Live With Special Guests, the set will feature the band's 1989 all-star performance of Tommy at the Universal Amphitheatre in Los Angeles plus live footage from the band's 1996 US Quadrophenia tour. A third disc will feature bonus live footage and rare acoustic performances of Who hits.

The Who will be inducted into the UK Music Hall of Fame on November 16.
