Depeche Mode miss first gig

Eighties synth pop group Depeche Mode was forced to cancel the first date of their North American tour due to hurricane Wilma.

Their first concert was supposed to take place in Fort Lauderdale, FL on Novmeber 2 but due to curfews and power outages in the area as a cause of the hurricane the concert was cancelled. On the band's website their manager Jonathan Kessler said: "Depeche Mode were excited to launch the tour in South Florida. However, they're not willing to jeopardize the safety of their fans, who would be putting themselves at risk traveling to and from the event under dangerous conditions."

The band will instead be starting their tour tonight in St. Petersberg's Time's Forum and all tickets for the Fort Lauderdale concert will be honoured there. Refunds are also available.

The band will be touring in support of their first album in four years Playing the Angel. They will finish off the year in North America and begin the tour anew in Europe in 2006.
