US Attacks Chinese Pirates

Published: 2005-10-31
Fed up with suing US citizens for pirating music, American music industry backers are coming down on pirates from other countries, and China in particular. And it's not just the recording industry that's putting up the fightůthis time it's the American government.

The Americans have used their clout in the World Trade Organization to demand that China tell them exactly what measures that country is taking to prevent piracy and copyright infringement on American intellectual property, like music. Basically, they want to know what punishments pirates in China face and how many of these punishments the Chinese government has doled out.

The Americans have estimated that they've lost billions of dollars in possible revenue from what the Chinese are taking from them for free. The United States have also got the backing of the Swiss and the Japanese on their quest to rid China of pirates.

The Chinese have until January 23rd to provide this information. What they plan to do after that remains a mystery.
