Low Perform The Bass Player Switch

Published: 2005-10-27
Minimalist pop trio Low have announced that longtime bassist Zak Sally has left the band, effective immediately. Fear not, though, Low fans, for a replacement has already been found. Matt Livingston, of Low frontman Alan Sparhawk's side project Retribution Gospel Choir (also featuring Red House Painter Mark Kozelek), will be filling in the bottom end for the Duluth threesome from now on.

Both sides issued statements explaining the split, which seems nothing if not amicable.

"It is with sadness and regret that we have accepted Zak's resignation from Low," wrote the band in a statement. "After 12 years together, we have a lot of great shared memories and musical moments. Zak's contributions to the band and his friendship have been invaluable, and we wish him and his family the best."

Sally's statement, meanwhile, read in part: "On a personal level, I can't hope to express what the folks who have helped, supported, and listened during my 12 year tenure in Low have meant to me. This band has been my entire adult life, and I had a [heck] of a ride. Thanks for everything."

This is actually the second time Sally has left the band - he quit briefly in the spring of 2003 only to immediately return when the band were offered the opening slot on Radiohead's US summer tour that year. Wise man.

Sally is retiring from the music biz to concentrate on his self-run printing press, La Mano 21. Low plan to record and tour throughout 2006.
