Jeff Martin Leaves The Tea Party

Published: 2005-10-19
In a surprising and seemingly sudden turn of events, Tea Party lead singer, guitarist and primary songwriter Jeff Martin has announced his departure from the band, essentially sealing their demise.

"I am deeply appreciative of all the support Tea Party fans have shown both the band and me over the years," said Martin in a statement announcing his decision to quit. "While I'm not ruling out a return of The Tea Party at some time in the future, I am focused for now on my acoustic solo record, and hope to release the new music this winter and tour in support of it."

Martin added, "I am excited to embark on this new musical chapter of my life and wish all the best to my two former bandmates and friends, Jeff Burrows and Stuart Chatwood." Martin's departure, however, appeared to be news to at least one of those friends. Chatwood, in an e-mail response to press inquiries, said that he "wasn't aware that the band had broken up."

The Tea Party formed in 1990 in Windsor, ON and quickly became a force on the Canadian music scene, eventually releasing 7 albums and garnering 13 Juno nominations in the process. The band also experienced huge success in Australia, where their classic rock-meets-Eastern music sounds struck a sizeable chord.

As for Martin's solo project, his statement also revealed that the album "is shaping up to be classic Martin and inescapably reminiscent of The Tea Party, with Eastern-tinged influences and inimitable vocals and guitar work." So÷a Tea Party record, then. Huh.

I am an Australian visiting Toronto for the first time and am a huge Tea Party fan.

The news of their demise is ironic given how much I liked the band and the fact that they have broken up while I am visiting this lively cosmopolitan city and the place of The Tea Party's genesis.

I hope that Mr Martin's solo career is a success.
