Unreleased Elliott Smith Songs Surface Online

Published: 2005-10-18
This Friday, October 21, will sadly mark the second anniversary of the death of singer and songwriter Elliott Smith; and, with the date approaching, more than 20 unreleased Smith songs have begun appearing on the internet.

The leaked material, dubbed From A Basement On The Hill II, purportedly features outtakes from Smith's final album, although some of the songs apparently date back to the mid-90's.

"I think some of (the songs) might have been considered for Basement, but not (all of them) necessarily," said Charlie Ramirez, creator of the official Smith fansite Sweet Adeline. According to Ramirez, some of the leaked songs date back to the 1996-97 sessions for Either/Or, though much of the material is indeed from the troubled sessions for Smith's final album.

Originally planned as a double album, Smith recorded up to an estimated 50 songs for From A Basement On A Hill, which was ultimately released as a 15-song single-disc CD after being completed posthumously by friend and producer Rob Schnapf and ex-girlfriend Joanna Bolme.

Smith's death was ruled a suicide and came after many years of well-publicized struggles with alcohol and drug abuse. He was 34 years old.
