Tom Petty To Be Awarded Billboard's Century Award

Published: 2005-10-17
Billboard has announced that this year they will be conferring the coveted Billboard Century Award upon the head of one Tom Petty. Petty, who presented the first ever Century Award to George Harrison in 1992, will receive the award on December 6 at the annual Billboard Music Awards in Las Vegas.

Despite the lifetime achievement-type decoration, Petty is still going plenty strong, mister. Currently finishing up recording on his third solo album, Highway Companion, Petty has also just completed a successful North American tour with The Heartbreakers and has four songs on the soundtrack to Cameron Crowe's latest movie, the poorly-received Elizabethtown.

"Tom Petty is one of the true great singer/songwriters," said Billboard co-executive editor Tamara Conniff in a statement. "Petty's songs and lyrics go to the root of the American dream. For over 30 years, Petty has been a rock icon who continues to inspire new generations of artists. We are honored to present him with the 2005 Century Award."

"This award comes at a particularly nice time as the Heartbreakers and I go into the 30th year of our career," said Petty. "I'm very honoured that Billboard has acknowledged me with this award."

Anyone else feel sorry for The Heartbreakers? If not, try reading over that last quote while putting extra emphasis on the word "me". Poor schlubs. Only their plentiful riches, comfortable anonymity and finely-honed heartbreaking abilities can console them now.
