Sonic Youth Loses Jim O'Rourke

Published: 2005-10-17
Multi-instrumentalist Jim O'Rourke is moving on from the NYC rock group Sonic Youth.

"He's really interested in pursuing stuff outside the musical arena, particularly film work," his former bandmate, guitarist Lee Ranaldo, told Billboard. "Not necessarily soundtrack work, but making films and getting involved in that community."

According to Ranaldo, there's no bad blood between O'Rourke and the rest of the band. "We want what is best for him. That's not to say either individually some of us won't continue to work with him, or that in a group setting he won't ever be involved again. But for the next phase though, we're developing all this new material without him. He won't be involved in the production."

O'Rourke has been with the band since 2002 though the band has been together since 1981. He contributed to two albums: 2002's Murray Street and 2004's Sonic Nurse.

The rest of Sonic Youth will start to put together their next album early in 2006.
