Mike Myers To Play Keith Moon In Upcoming Movie Bio

Published: 2005-10-03
Fans of The Who can now commence months of wary anticipation; the long-rumoured movie about the life of Keith Moon is now a reality, with Scarborough's own Mike Myers scoring the role of the legendary drummer. The as-yet untitled film has been in the development stage for the better part of a decade, with Who vocalist Roger Daltrey on board as producer from the get-go.

Myers was first connected with the project in 2002 but was too busy with the Austin Powers movies to commit to the part. However, with the spy spoof franchise now put to bed, Myers has been cleared to take on the role of the notorious Moon, whom the actor referred to as "a fascinating character."

Moon's status as a rock and roll legend stemmed from his unique and influential drumming style, as well as his riotous sense of humour and knack for booze and drug-fuelled escapades, famously driving a Rolls Royce into a swimming pool as well as trashing countless hotel rooms. Moon died in 1978, aged 32, ironically from an overdose of prescription pills he was taking to combat his chronic alcoholism.

Daltrey, who referred recently to Myers as "a genius", is co-producing the film with Spitfire Pictures, the company responsible for Martin Scorsese's recent No Direction Home documentary about Bob Dylan. A director is expected to be announced for the project soon.
