Urban Music Awards in Canada

Published: 2005-09-30
Here in the Great White North most folks still listen to predominately rock or country music, but that is slowly changing.

This shows when events like the Canadian Urban Music Awards begin to garner some attention. Taking place on November 28th and 29th in Toronto, the seventh Urban Music Awards, hosted by comedian Russell Peters, are starting to have some more recognizable names.

With five nominations apiece for hip hop diva Jully Black, whose single "Sweat of Your Brow" has been garnering critical and commercial praise, and K-OS, whose album Joyful Rebellion has been all over the radio over the past year.

Coming in with a decent four nods a piece are Ottawa's Keisha Chante and R&B songstress Divine Brown. Also nominated are artists like Maestro, Massari, and Shawn Desman.

A special award will be given to Canadian Idol judge Farley Flex, who began in the industry as a concert promoter at age 15. Last year this special award was given to video director Mr. X (formerly Little X - I'm sure he'll be just X soon enough).
