A couple of groups of talented ladies are heading out to tour the United States this fall, but don't go thinking this show will feature some delicate, folksy pop tunes ‡ la Lilith Fair: the acts in question are hip-hop trio Northern State and Calgary rockers Tegan and Sara.
Usually when you think of hip-hop, visions of black urban males covered in bling pop into your mind. So when Northern State, a trio of white, suburban females takes the stage, most folks are more than a bit surprised.
The girls understand the stereotypes they're up against as they enter a world dominated by acts like the Game and 50 Cent and have nevertheless managed to garner acclaim. Their first studio release, 2004's All City, featured producers like Cypress Hill's Muggs, the Roots' Ahmir "?uestlove" Thompson.
Since the release of their 2004 album, So Jealous, Tegan and Sara's success has been steadily climbing. The album was one of Rolling Stone's 50 best in 2004, and they've toured with everyone from Rufus Wainwright and Neil Young to the Killers and Ryan Adams.
