Pop Montreal Festival

Published: 2005-09-28
If you're in the beautiful historic, hipster city of Montreal, I sincerely hope you're checking out the Pop Montreal Festival this year. The festival is taking place right now, running from yesterday until October 3rd.

On the festival's website, www.popmontreal.com, the organizers have this to say about the gathering: "In 2005, Pop Montreal continues to search for the greatest and most innovative independent musical talents in Montreal and abroad, with the ultimate aim of bringing them together in a festival that celebrates the intangible and transcendent value of music and art. We do this in an atmosphere that challenges industry norms and promotes social awareness and cultural relevance. We are not concert promoters. We are collaborators, co-organizers, and lovers of music in the purest sense. We want nothing more than to help people bring their art to the world. And finally, we will continue to throw the greatest party in the world!"

An eclectic collection of musicians and musical styles from all over the world will be on hand for the fest. Some of those attending include Beck, Foxy Brown, Interpol, and Controller.controller. Recent Mercury Prize winners Antony and the Johnsons will be there Thursday evening, and Canadian bands like folksy Manitobans Lindy and post-punk-rockers Metric will also be at the festival. Bands will be playing in different venues across the city.

Along with these and many, many other musicians at the fest, indie films from Canada and abroad will be shown and discussions about the connections between music and social activism held.

Tickets are a mere $125 for the whole festival. Check out the website for more details.
