Songs from the Heart Songwriter Awards

Published: 2004-02-12
For the budding songwriter of the year from Ontario, here is your chance to show your stuff. The Ontario Council of Folk Festivals presents its tenth annual Song from the Heart Songwriting Awards. The Awards are given for the best written song in English and in French. Winners receive $1,000 and the chance to showcase their song at the Ontario Council of Folk Festivals Conference in Guelph. While only one song in each language (English and French) is awarded, the council chooses a $100 winner in each of five categories – political song, instrumental, humourous song, children's song, and world music. Songs in the world music category may be in any language; but the judges require a translation of the lyrics into English or French. In addition the top eight songs overall (excluding the winners) are entered into the Ontario Arts Council's Colleen Peterson Songwriting Awards for a chance to win $1,000.

The contest is open to any resident of Ontario. The deadline for entry is May 15, 2004. A $15 entry fee and a cassette or CD of the song is required. Songs may be sung by anyone as long as the entry is clearly done and presented well. Winners will be announced by July 2004. For more information on the Ontario Council of Folk Festival's 2004 Songwriting contest or for an entry form go to or call 1-866-292-6233.
