John Peel Day Concert Planned

Published: 2005-09-20
When writing down holidays in your calendar for next month, don't forget Thanksgiving in Canada, Fall Harvest (Oct 31), and John Peel Day.

John Peel was a highly influential disc jockey on the UK scene and one of the original DJs on BBC Radio 1 in 1967. With an eclectic taste in music, he introduced bands to the listening public and established a name for himself on the radio. Acts like David Bowie, Joy Division, and the Smiths credit Peel with providing a major boost to their careers.

The popular DJ passed away on October 25th, 2004. But John Peel Day will be on October 13th to commemorate the day of his final broadcast. As part of the celebrations, Radio 1 will hold a massive concert the day before at London's Queen Elizabeth Hall. Acts will include New Order, Super Furry Animals, The Fall, Laura Cantrell, Misty in Roots, Venetian Snares, and Jawbone.

Aside from the BBC show, several smaller shows across the UK will mark John Peel Day.
