U2 Song Inspires African Well Fund Campaign

Published: 2005-09-14
Non-profit organization the African Well Fund, formed by a group of U2 fans in 2002, has launched a new fundraising campaign timed to coincide with the third leg of U2's Vertigo tour. The Where You Live campaign takes as its inspiration lyrics from U2's song "Crumbs from Your Table," namely "Where you live/ Should not decide/ Whether you live/ Or whether you die."

The African Well Fund's goal is to develop awareness of the shortage of clean water available in Africa, and to raise funds to build wells and other necessary water projects. Access to clean water supplies runs as low as 22 per cent in impoverished countries such as Ethiopia, while more than 3 million people die every year in Africa as a result of preventable water-borne diseases.

The organization will be asking U2 fans throughout the Vertigo tour to donate money and raise awareness for the project. Since its inception, the African Well Fund has raised over $100,000 US for water projects in Africa. To find out more, visit their website at www.africanwellfund.org.

U2, meanwhile, began the third leg of its Vertigo tour in Toronto this week, and will be playing the following dates in Canada throughout the run:

September 14, 16 & 17, Toronto, ON - Air Canada Centre
November 25, Ottawa, ON - Corel Centre
November 26 & 28, Montreal, QC - Bell Centre (with Arcade Fire)
