Gorillaz Announce World Tour Plans, Virtual Reality-Style

Published: 2005-09-07
Cartoon rockers Gorillaz, a.k.a. Damon Albarn and friends, have announced plans for a virtual world tour. The tour will feature the cartoon characters 2-D, Murdoc, Noodle and Russell appearing on stage as 3-D holograms (the future is now!), though the tour will likely not take place until 2007 given the unbelievable technical and financial obstacles inherent to such an ambitious plan.

It is not yet known whether the tour will feature live performers providing the music for the cartoon characters at each show, or whether pre-recorded music will be used. Talk of a Gorillaz movie is also rampant, with Capitol Music UK president Keith Wozencroft particularly enthusiastic about the possibilities of marketing a virtual band.

"Gorillaz are a perfect band for the new age in that they fit with what's happening in the digital world", Wozencroft told the UK's Music Week, "and that's what Damon and Jamie (Hewlett) had in mind when they began the project. We always believed there could be a move into games, films or a tour and this is the first example of us realizing one of those possibilities."

Gorillaz, who currently own the No. 1 spot on the UK singles chart with "Dare", will somehow appear at a one-off event in London, England at the end of October to perform a version of "Feel Good, Inc.".
