November 15 is a date for all fans of US prog-metal band System of a Down to circle on their calendars. For that is the date when the band, in a fit of Use Your Illusion fertility, will release Hypnotize, the so-called "companion album" to this year's already released Mezmerize.
Recorded simultaneously with the already-platinum Mezmerize, the album is, according to SOAD guitarist Daron Malakian, along the same musical lines as its recent predecessor. "I'm so inside of it that maybe that's a little tough for me to tell, but I don't see too big of a difference," Malakian told Iceberg Radio recently. "I see them both as one record, you know? Not to compare us to, like, the Beatles, but the only thing I can compare it to is, like, you listen to the 'White Album' and it's a double album, but, like, they're just a bunch of great songs."
Like÷hmmm. Beatles references aside, Malakian also announced that the new album will feature the band's first-ever instrumental song and that the next System of a Down single will be the upcoming record's title track. Furthermore, in an interview with The Rock Radio website, Malakian calmed fans' potential fears that the second album might simply feature castoffs from the Mezmerize sessions.
"It didn't come down to, like, the best songs are gonna be on Mezmerize and the other songs are gonna be on Hypnotize. It didn't work out that way. We made sure that we didn't do it that way. There's, like, a lot of great material on Hypnotize, and knowing we had two records full of great songs - if we had two records and one of them wasn't as great as the other, we wouldn't have done it."
Seriously, doesn't anyone edit out the "likes" when they're transcribing interviews anymore? To ready fans for another recorded System Of A Down onslaught, the band will head out on a Pearl Jam-like extensive Canadian tour (though nothing for you, Atlantic Canada) that looks a little something like this:
August 29, Montreal, QC - Bell Centre
August 30 & 31, Quebec City, QC - Colisee Pepsi Arena
September 1, Toronto, ON - Air Canada Centre
September 3, Hamilton, ON - Copps Coliseum
September 17, Vancouver, BC - Pacific Coliseum
September 19, Calgary, AB - Pengrowth Saddledome
September 20, Edmonton, AB - Rexall Place
September 22, Winnipeg, MB - MTS Centre
