The Strokes Set Album Release Date, Prepare to Hit the Road

Published: 2005-08-24
Today is the birthday of one Julian Casablancas, lead singer for NYC hipsters the Strokes. And what better way to celebrate than by announcing the release date of his band's third album. The as-yet-untitled disc will be released on January 24th of next year, avoiding the packed Christmas release schedule.

The album's leadoff single, "Juicebox," will be, to use standard record biz lingo, "serviced to radio" sometime in mid-October. The band will also return to the live stage that month for the first time in almost a year, previewing new material for fans on a short tour of South America. Intimate club dates are also reportedly scheduled for this fall in North America, Europe, Australia, and Japan, though no particulars are available as of yet.

The year to date has found the band holed up in their own Manhattan recording studio, busily recording the follow-up to 2003's mildly disappointing Room on Fire. The NME got a sneak peak of the album a few months ago and reported that the then-unmixed material found the band "moving into more experimental areas."

Drummer and Mr. Drew Barrymore Fab Moretti revealed to the NME at the time that the band felt more relaxed during this recording, helmed by producer David Kahne.

"To get where we are right now we couldn't have the pressure of hearing the fucking change fall in the bucket every time seconds passed [in the studio]. So instead of using the money [label executives] were going to give us to make the third record at a studio, we just bought our equipment and now we have it permanently and we don't feel that guillotine falling. It really helps us to explore."

And, with their new-found freedom from typical studio constraints, the band was able to take the time and make the album their way, something that Moretti admitted was missing from the Room on Fire sessions.

"I feel like this was the perfect amount of time and it's gonna be the perfect set up for the record," he said, "because we'll be able to go to all the places we want to go and not feel like we don't have the best possible record we could have on our hands."
