Thievery Corporation, Le Tigre Among Operation Ceasefire Acts

Published: 2005-08-16
Washington, D.C. electronic-pop duo Thievery Corporation have assembled a number of their politically like-minded musical friends for a protest rally and concert to be held in the American capital on September 24.

The coalition has named itself Operation Ceasefire and the concert, which will be held on the grounds of the Washington Monument, will include performances by Le Tigre, Steve Earle, soul-garage punks The Bellrays, Bouncing Souls, Ted Leo & The Pharmacists, rap duo The Coup and former MC5 guitarist Wayne Kramer, and will be hosted by Jello Biafra.

Timed to coincide with the International Monetary Fund and World Bank meetings that will be taking place in D.C. that weekend, the concert has been billed as a "cultural resistance" to the ongoing occupation of Iraq by US forces.

Organizer Eric Hilton of Thievery Corporation estimates crowds of up to 40,000 for the concert, which will occur the same weekend as numerous other protests and marches already scheduled for that time, including those organized by Iraq Veterans Against The War and Military Families Speak Out.

The Operation Ceasefire show promises to be a wee bit different than the concert taking place on Washington's National Mall two weeks beforehand. Scheduled for September 11 (now why does that date ring a bell?), Clint Black will headline the America Supports You concert in support of the military and "the victims of the Sep 11, 2001 attacks". If you're wondering who's behind that festival, the concert will be followed by a "Freedom Walk" sponsored by the US Department of Defence. Subtle.

Which one would you rather attend?

I'd rather see Clint Black. His voice and his concerts are absolutely phenomonal! He really can sing... he's not just a studio-produced artist like so many of the pop groups that are big these days.
